2016 Toronado X Whitten's Delight
2 year old Bay Filly
Sire: Toronado Dam: Whitten's Delight
Trainer's Name: Cindy Alderson
Cracking Super Vobis Filly by First Season Swettenham sire -
Every now and then a young stallion creates a stir before even having runners. Good judges inspecting his progeny at the sales are impressed, breakers more so. His youngsters end up in good stables and everyone starts talking about them.
Such a horse is TORONADO who, from his Swettenham Stud base in Victoria has proven extremely popular with breeders - serving 414 mares in his first three years. And sales results have been most encouraging with his yearlings selling for up to $340,000 to such good judges as Hawkes Racing, Robbie Griffiths, James Bester, Paul Moroney, Michael Kent, John Foote and Darren Weir.
TORONADOis bred to succeed at stud being a son of the seven times Group One winner HIGH CHAPPAREL who did such a great job at stud - especially in Australia where 14 of his 21 Group One winners raced. Whilst his overall statistics of 60.8% winners-to-runners with 7.2% stakes winners are good his southern hemisphere record is all the more impressive at 70.2% and 7.8%.
A force for several years, HIGH CHAPPAREL - who died four years ago - is the sire of such outstanding gallopers as SO YOU THINK, DUNDEEL, SHOOT OUT and last year's VRC Derby and Melbourne Cup winners ACE HIGH and REKINDLING.
One of his best sons, TORONADO won six of his 12 starts including the Gr.1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and the prestigious Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. Racing against only the best of his era, he had not only a dazzling turn of foot but also great determination.
Hailing from a high class international family that has enjoyed big race success in Australia (Heart Of Dreams, French Clock), TORONADO has made an exciting start to his stud career in the northern hemisphere with a winner at just his second runner.
All studies show that, along with stakes winners, city winning mares make the best broodmares and this filly is the first foal produced by the talented Whitten's Delight whose five victories over a variety of distances between 1100m and 1600m all came at metropolitan level.
She is one of six winners produced by the good broodmare Princess Delight, also dam of the Gr.2 placed Awakened and the city winners Pitt Street and Lord Topper. Princess Delight's dam Excitant by the great speed influence Rory's Jester also did a good job at stud with six winners including the Gr.3 placed Gladwell and further back this is also the family of the Gr.1 winners GOLD FEVER, BOISEROUS and BELLAMY ROAD.
This family has also enjoyed good success in Australia with recent Gr.3 winner PERAST being another of its members.
Boasting three crosses of the breed shaping Danzig, this filly has as her dam sire the triple Group One winning sprinter/miler Barely A Moment and has close up in pedigree such big names as Sadler's Wells, Gone West, Danehill and Nijinsky II.
Only 15% now remaining – Cindy and Lyn Alderson retaining over 50% in this cracking filly.
