The Day That Was

Firstly, our Melbourne Cup tipster - while the performance of Geoff’s Cup pick `Jukebox Jury,’ as well as his roughie `Hawk Island’ both raced as if cognisant of their (long) odds, his best bet of the day, Clanbrooke’s `Influential Miss,’ did well to come from a long way back to finish 3rd in Race 2. Trainer Pat Carey will now weigh up options going forward, with a view to testing the mare over a little more ground as soon as possible.

As our recently acquired 4YO Lonhro Gelding `Doggerel’ (pictured) gears up for his first race for Clanbrooke  at Kyneton later today, connections of half-brother `Lamasery’ celebrated another Stakes victory yesterday when the 5YO saluted in Listed J. Walker S, his first start since his placing (3d.) in the G1 Metropolitan last month. `Doggerel’ is our first horse with Gisborne-based Jason Cannon and we are hoping he can find some form thanks to his change of environment. Good Luck to connections.

Picking the winner of the Melbourne Cup is never easy and it seems that sticking with European bloodlines is the best guide at present. Interesting to see some of Australia’s top trainer at the Tattersall’s UK sales recently, purchasing future Cup hopefuls. With a bit of luck our UK-based French-bred Sinndar colt will be in the mix over the next year or two as well.

Congratulations also to Lauren, the winner of the Facebook Cup Sweep. You’re off to the Caulfield Members’ Reserve with a friend.
