Guineas the goal for Gredington

Gredington earned a shot at spring riches with a fast-finishing victory in Sunday’s $35,000 Nevcon Structural Steel 2YO Handicap (1300m) at Warrnambool.

Trainer Pat Hyland said the son of Magnus, who finished fourth in the Group 2 VRC Sires Produce (1400m) in March, would now be aimed towards the $1 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Ocotber.

“It was a great effort, I’d given up after the first fifty yards when he got back that far but I think he could be a Guineas horse,” Hyland said.

“I know it’s only Warrnambool on a wet day but he’s a very promising horse.

“He’s carried 60kg and it was a great effort, I think we’re going to have a lot of fun with him.”

Settling towards the rear of the field early, Gredington ($3.50) appeared to have his work cut out for him at the top of the straight when Just One Moment ($2.20F) raced clear.

However the further they went the stronger he got and he eventually finished too powerfully for the favourite to win by a head on the line, with Broadway Danza ($10) a further two lengths away in third.

Jackie Beriman was also full of praise for the colt after admitting she rode against instructions early in the race.

“I wasn’t supposed to ride him like that but I was going to be stuck wide,” Beriman said.

“I ended up three-wide with cover behind Damien Oliver (Broadway Danza) and he was struggling a little bit in the heavy going, it’s very heavy out there, but he really revelled in it that last bit.

“He’s going to get over further and he’s a really nice horse with a bright future.”

Beriman then completed a double when she partnered the Quinton Scott-trained Forgeress to win the $35,000 Western District Employment Access Handicap (1200m).
