Introducing our newest trainer - Luke Oliver

May 16, 2017

Many trainers have a family rich in racing history. Trainers often train because they are following in the footsteps of a pathway that has been laid by the generations before them.

Luke Oliver is different. He simply grew up loving racing. From the first time he attended the races as a young boy he knew the passion he had for the sport of kings would one day become part of his every day life.

After spending his early adulthood working in the corporate banking sector Luke soon found the draw of the thoroughbred to be an overwhelming calling. Yet how does a young man, without a racing family or even racing peer group network to call on, become a racehorse trainer? With the solution to this problem not readily apparent Luke decided to resist the urgings of those around him to make haste slowly and decided on a more simple if somewhat rushed approach - he went to the nearest city track to his home and knocked on the first trainers door he found and demanded a job.

That trainer was revered Caulfield trainer James Riley. Somehow Luke managed to convince James to take him on and the rest, as they say, is history.

Based at Caulfield Luke has been slowly but surely building his reputation and stable over the past seven years. He cut his teeth spending his own money on tried horses like Sensational Toy and Royal Ida.The Toy went on to win ten races and $420,000 in prize money , Royal Ida was rejuvenated by the move to Caulfield winning the Group 3 Standish and over $300,000 in prize money in 18 months after Luke purchased him from a paddock. Not a bad return from two horses costing under $20,000.00 for the pair. The stable has consistently produced city winners from limited opportunities and horses like Elmore , Ulysses, Diamondsontheinside , Good Red in the Bagot and Star Lani are amongst those who have saluted at Flemington. To bring the story up to date Zeletto, Jessy Belle,Khutulun,Arena Rock and Hamam are all city winners in the first two months of the season ,all of these horses made their debuts for the stable and highlight Luke's ability to select and develop racehorses.Luke is a trainer that likes to be hands on and prides himself on getting the best out of every horse.
