After a hat-trick of wins, the staying type Howlin’ Rain has gone for a break for issues more mental than physical.

Trainer Cindy Alderson explained on Saturday that despite putting together three restricted class wins up to 2040 metres, there was room for so much more improvement from the talented gelding given his racing manners.

“He’s having a little break at the moment,” Alderson said.

“He’s still a bit of a work in progress, but hopefully he gets his manners right.

“He over-races. They ran quicker (earlier sectionals) than they did in the shorter races (at The Valley) and he was still over-racing.

“He’s very highly strung. It’s really hard to get his brain right, but we’re getting him there.”

Howlin’ Rain, who was a $6000 yearling purchase by Fiorente, has now won more than $210,000 with the promise of more to come.
